Question 1 · Hard
A village has well water with fluoride of 3 mg/L, and many schoolchildren have mottled teeth. No other water source is available. Which measure should the health team recommend?
- ABoiling all drinking water
- BFluoride toothpaste for every child
- CDefluoridation by the Nalgonda technique
- DExtra chlorination of the well

Answer: C · Defluoridation by the Nalgonda technique
Fluoride above about 1.5 mg/L causes dental and later skeletal fluorosis, so the problem is the water source itself. Where no alternative source exists, the Nalgonda technique removes fluoride by adding alum and lime, followed by flocculation, settling and filtration. Chlorination and boiling do not remove fluoride, and boiling even concentrates it.
- A: Boiling concentrates fluoride as water evaporates.
- B: Fluoride toothpaste only adds to the fluoride load.
- D: Chlorination disinfects but leaves the fluoride unchanged.
